A turbidity tube is a clear tube used to visually assess the turbidity, or cloudiness, of a water sample. The sample is viewed against a marker through the water column, and the result can be determined using the tube's scale.

They can be used for field assessment of water clarity and turbidity, including surface-water monitoring associated with construction activities.

A turbidity tube is a field-monitoring method and should not automatically be considered a replacement for laboratory analysis or other specified monitoring methods. Always follow the monitoring methodology and requirements applicable to your individual project.

In general, an NTU reading of 60 is considered to contain surface water of a lower silt volume. A site-specific environmental permit will outline the maximum number of suspended solids permitted to discharge.

Results should be recorded and interpreted according to the project's monitoring procedures and Construction Surface Water Management Plan, where applicable.
